格林多是希臘的一座名城，因其位於半島的窄狹地帶，有東西兩港，遂成為商業及東西文化交流的重鎮，同時又為羅馬帝國阿哈雅省省會，總督即駐節於此（宗18:12）。格城因商業發達，人民生活驕奢，道德隨之每況愈下，淫靡之風，聞名當時。

格城教會是保祿第二次傳教時所開創的，時在公元51年（宗18:1-18）。他在該城傳教約一年半之久，歸化的人數相當多，其中雖有猶太人，但大多數是由外教而歸化的。及至保祿離開了格城，從未忘懷該城教會，時常探聽該教會的情況，因此便開始了信件的往還（見7:1等處），或者答覆問題，或者討論宗教問題。由今之格前後二書，可知保祿還給該城寫了另外兩封信（格前5:9；格後2:4, 7:8），可惜今已失傳。

《格林多後書》是宗徒於公元57年夏在馬其頓寫的。寫這信的動機，是因他那年夏天離開厄弗所，經特洛阿而到馬其頓時，在那裏遇見了他派往格林多的使者弟鐸，聽了他的一切報告之後，便給格林多教會寫了這信：一方面是為誇讚他們能從善如流，痛改前非；另一方面是為駁斥猶太主義保守派對他的誹謗，以衛護自己的宗徒職權。

本書較前書更顯示出了宗徒的內心與性格，和他慈父般的心腸，以及他的憂苦、焦慮和他所獲得的特殊神恩。
