《訓道篇》在《智慧書》中別具一格，好似一位思想家所寫的筆記，為此在本書內，就文字和思想而言，都不易作出一個有系統的分析。
作者在序文內（1:1-11），陳述「萬事皆虛」的命題後，反覆凝神推敲：人生的目的究是什麼。作者便將他對這問題推敲所得的雜感，一一記下。一切感想的總結，仍不外是：人類的慾望以及一切勞碌，盡屬虛幻（1:12-12:8）。
求福免禍乃人之熱烈的願望，人生來就懷有一種追求萬事如意，永遠幸福的慾望，這慾望既與生俱來，就不能沒有實現的可能；但統查人世，幾無一事能真正使人心滿意足。依照天主對以民所頒的法律，善人必獲享幸福，但事實卻正相反：惡人萬事亨通，義人多災多難（3:16, 8:10-14）。於是作者乃聯想到人來世的命運，無如按當時對來世所有的觀念，人死後，靈魂只有降入陰府一途，在該處度其漫漫無期的幽暗歲月（9:4-10, 11:8, 12:5-7），是以對來世也未有一令人滿意的解答。不過作者憑藉信德，承認世事雖千變萬化，但冥冥中幕後仍由天主支配一切；天主必將秉公賞善罰惡。天主的智慧以及他奇妙的化工，人是無法瞭解的（3:11, 10:14）；故無論如何，人不可與天主爭辯（6:10, 7:23）。
為此，作者曾一再將他的雜感作了簡短的結論：對天命無論是福是禍，不應追問，只應虛心由天主手中接受（2:24-25, 7:14）；另一方面，人生歲月無幾，人應及時享受天主慨然賜給他的賞心樂事。果如此，則在遇到痛苦時，也就比較容易忍受（3:12-13, 5:17-18, 8:15, 9:7-10, 11:9-10）。上述數點，即本書思想一概括的素描。
末後，由另一作者，也許是《訓道篇》作者的弟子，為本書作了一總結（12:9-13），將本書思想的主題總括起來說：人當「敬畏上主，遵守他的誡命」，其餘一切盡可托付於天主手中。
《訓道篇》大約是紀元前三世紀的作品。作者自稱為「達味之子耶路撒冷的君王」（訓1:1），也不過只是一種偽託，願偽託撒羅滿智王的盛名，使人更重視他的著作，更容易接受他的思想和勸告。
舊約時代，啟示尚未臻於盡善盡美的地步，由本書又得一明證。作者一如其他熱心以民，因尚未能認清人生最後目的而感到苦悶。在舊約後期，對現世的苦楚，來世常生，及獲得來世幸福的希望，雖已逐漸明朗化，但極清晰的概念，仍只在新約時代，耶穌降生之後。耶穌降生，纔把今世的勞碌苦難，為獲得來世的永生幸福，具有無比的價值，昭示給世人。因此度一修德克己的聖善生活，決非徒勞無功。今蒙受了新約啟示光照的我們，如能體察仿效作者在舊約時代所有的信仰，必將獲益匪淺，殆無可疑。",
