《艾斯德爾傳》好像《友弟德傳》，是敘述天主怎樣藉另一位女英雄，拯救猶太人免於滅亡厄運。據一般經學者的意見，書內的史事，發生於波斯國薛西斯王朝。

薛西斯王將抗命的皇后廢棄，另選立一位猶太少女艾斯德爾為后。不久以後，這位新后的養父摩爾德開，因不肯向當朝一品的大官哈曼低首下拜，使哈曼十分惱怒，因而仇恨一切猶太人，遂求君王將猶太人殺盡，君王准如所請。摩爾德開聽見這個凶信，十分恐懼，於是一面求天主拯救，另一面託人將此凶信報告給艾斯德爾，並面授機宜，要她為猶太同胞懇求君王開恩。艾斯德爾終於獲得了君王的大赦，不但救猶太人免於大難，而且將哈曼置於死地，使自己的養父摩爾德開替代了哈曼的高位。猶太人從那時起，特立了「普陵節」，以紀念他們此次獲救的大恩。

本書所記載的主要事實，無疑是有歷史的根據；但由全書的敘事推斷，作者以他生花妙筆，將一些史事誇大，加以渲染，為顯示以色列民族的光榮和力量。

作者的目的，也好像《友弟德傳》，在證明天主常照顧自己的子民；雖然他們僑居異國，屬人權下，天主仍照顧那些信賴他的人，不致遭滅族之禍。

使經學者深感困惑的，是本書自古以來流傳兩種不同的經文：一為希伯來文，一為希臘文，前者較短，後者較長；較長的部分，我們稱之為補錄，亦即通常所稱的「次經」部分。「拉丁本」將這些補錄全置於書尾；但聖教會自初即採用希臘文聖經，並且這些補錄，為明瞭本書的史事，是相當重要的。因此「中文譯本」，按「希臘譯本」的次序，將這些補錄一併譯出。
