馬爾谷又名若望，生於耶路撒冷，出於富有家庭（宗12:12-13）受過良好教育，對於希臘文亦有相當的造詣。他與巴爾納伯是表兄弟（哥4:10）。當保祿與巴爾納伯初次出外傳教時，他曾參於行列；但不知何故，半途獨自返回了耶京（宗13:5-13）；因此，保祿二次出外傳教時，不願再接受他參加，他遂與巴爾納伯作伴出外傳教（宗15:37-39）。大約在喀勞狄皇帝逝世後（公元54年），他隨伯多祿到了羅馬（哥4:10）；（費1:24）；後又去了小亞細亞，從那裏又返回羅馬，作了伯多祿和保祿的助手（伯前5:13）(弟後4:11）。伯多祿很喜愛他，稱他為自己的「兒子」（伯前5:13）。歷代相傳，他是伯多祿的「翻譯員」和「隨員」，以後作了埃及亞歷山大里亞城的首任主教。聖教會每年4月25日慶祝他的瞻禮，並認他是一位為主殉道的聖史。
根據歷代一致的傳授，馬爾谷是第二部《福音》的作者，依照伯多祿的教理講授，編寫了這部《福音》。這可由《馬爾谷福音》的內容與特徵得到證明，因為作者提出伯多祿的事蹟，遠勝其他宗徒的事蹟；可是另一方面，凡對伯多祿有光彩的事，多次略而不提；反之，對他的缺點，卻記得較為詳細。
馬爾谷寫《福音》的目的，從1:1可知，是要證明基督的天主性；寫作的對象，是信奉基督的外邦人，特別是因伯多祿宣講而歸化的羅馬人，為此，馬爾谷很少引用《舊約》的預言，多具體地描述基督所行的奇蹟異能，以證明基督具有超自然和制勝惡魔的能力。
寫作的地點，依據歷來的傳說，應是羅馬。寫作的時期，大約是在公元55年至60年間，因為本書晚於《瑪竇福音》，而早於《路加福音》。
本《福音》是四《福音》中最簡短的一部。對耶穌的童年事蹟隻字未提，對耶穌的言論也很少記述；對耶穌公開生活的事蹟，全是依據聖伯多祿的的傳授，按次敘述（參閱宗10:36-43）：從耶穌受洗開始（1:1-13），繼而敘述耶穌在加里肋亞（1:14-9:50）及猶太和耶京的傳教生活（10-13章）；最後以苦難聖死與復活升天結束（14-16章）。
馬爾谷的文筆雖不甚典雅，卻生動有力，特別是對細小的節目，描寫得非常詳細：這明顯是作者根據目睹其事的人，即伯多祿的口述而記載的。為此，本《福音》亦實可稱為《伯多祿福音》。",
